There is much to see and explore on Bald Head Island whether you are a first-time visitor or a resident. Programs ranging from bird watching to kayaking through the salt marsh to hiking in the beautiful maritime forest are available throughout the year. The summer season is active with children’s nature camps and the always-popular nightly Turtle Walks. The Conservancy’s education staff has a unique and expert perspective on the island’s habitats and wildlife, and strives to provide quality environmental education programs for all ages. If you are coming to the island during a time when we don’t have any programs offered, please contact us to set up a private program that suits your group’s needs and interests.
The conservancy sponsors workshops for young people, including canoe trips, turtle walks, beach sweeps, and conservation programs, but its biggest task is the preservation of the endangered loggerhead turtle. More than 30 percent of all the loggerhead turtle nesting sites recorded on the North Carolina coast are on this island. The Sea Turtle Nest Protection Project is responsible for monitoring the nesting of these endangered turtles and holds special programs about them.
