Balboa island is so family friendly. It feels nostalgic to cross the little bridge and drive past cute boutiques and ice cream shops. Our family likes to come to Balboa for a breakfast treat (coffee and giant sticky buns). You see a lot of dogs and bikers in spandex if you hang out near Starbucks. We usually take out treats and start walking. The path around the island is not to long, but long-enough for us to take a stroll with the kids. No bikes are allowed on the sidewalks, so we let the kids run a little ahead and explore as my husband and I walk hand in hand, dreaming of buying a house here one day. Hey, a person can dream...
Pay about $1 and take a ride on the car ferry across to balboa Island from Newport beach. Yeah, the ferry's smelly and fumy from all the cars, but its worth the money. And its the only way over there:) When on the island, you can walk the front and gaze enviously into the multi million dollar homes that looks as if no one lives there. Stop and get a chocolate covered banana or cheesecake in the town and spend a few $$ on a magnet that say I've been here! If anything, do it for the ferry. The kids love to ride on boats! Even though there's no sand to play on at Balboa Island, the walk along the front will keep them occupied enough and once you get to town, treat them to something cold and sweet!
We decided to come to Balboa Island for its annual Balboa Island Parade. Balboa Island has a small beach town feel with shops and restaurants along Marine Ave. The parade itself was very festive with people from the tight-knit community riding in vintage cars and dressed in costumes. Kids definitely enjoyed the candy thrown to the crowd from the parade participants. Being at this parade on such a beautiful day was such a great way to start off the summer. After the parade we had some lunch and walked around the carefree town. Homes are beautiful here. Taking the ferry from Balboa Pavilion and spending the afternoon at Balboa Island was a fun daytime outing.
After you drive across the bridge on Jamboree Rd. and find a place to park on this beautiful little island, enjoy walking on the boardwalk. You will see beautiful homes, docks, boats, Newport Bay, and a street with fun shops to explore. My kids enjoy walking along the sand and picking up shells while we push the stroller along the boardwalk (which is constructed from cement). You must check out the ice cream at Balboa Bars, or enjoy a yummy lunch at Wilma's Patio.
Travel the ferry by car or as a pedestrian to the other side of the bay which is Balboa/Newport Peninsula. There you will find Balboa Funzone which includes a ferris wheel, carousel and an arcade.
The beauty of this place is amazing with the sunlight, beautiful boats and amazing houses.
