Living up to its name, this beach is often a favorite among moms for their "babies." A natural set of lava boulders forms a partially protected stretch of sand for beach-goers. Often when the other beaches are being hit with high surf, Baby Beach remains calm.
Best in the summertime, the South shore is typically hit with larger surf in the wintertime. There are no beach facilities or lifeguards here.
We spent a bit of time searching for the best beach to take our 2 1/2 year old son. This infamous Baby Beach was one of the top on our list to explore. Maybe it was because we visited Kauai in early December, but we were very disappointed when we checked it out. The tide must have been high and the waves/currents were relatively strong (too much for our toddler). Suffice to say, we didn't stay long. We ended up spending most of our time at Poipu Beach.
A reason we really like going to beaches in Hawaii is because most are equipped with outdoor showers for washing off the sand and salt after playing at the beach (this comes in especially handy with little ones). There is only limited street parking here as well, and visitors will have to walk between private residences to get to the beach. This might be a great place in the summers when the other beaches get too packed, but we didn't find it to our liking this winter.
My wife and I fell in love with this petite beach before we had kids. We always said - can't wait to bring our own child here. Well, we had wanted to go this year but the economy kind of scared us out of our Kauai trip...decided to stay in California for our summer vacation (more on that in another post). What's the beach got going for it? Not much - that's the whole point! It's small (kid can't really wander off), the water is warm, shallow and waveless and it's not heavily visited. Perfection for us. There are also some cute rental cottages right across the street that we plan to stay at in the future. Oh, last but not least, it's on the South Shore, aka the sunny side. Aloha.
We came here with our baby girl who's usually terrified of the crashing waves. The surf is so calm here, we actually got her into the water in her floatie. Easy to find and get to. The sand extends only a bit into the water, so be sure to wear your water shoes and protect your toes from the lava rocks below.
