The best time to tour Babcock is in the rainy season (late May to Oct.) The alligators actually swim by the sides of the bus as the bus submerges in the swamp and mangroves. If the tour company tells you on the phone that the bus can't go on the entire tour due to excessive rainfall, don't go. They discount your tickets but you see almost nothing. If you go in the winter months, the swamp is dry and it is still beautiful to see, but I prefer the rainy season. Every inch of elevation in the swamp offers a different panorama.
East of town, wilderness still prevails. Route 31 is a tranquil drive along undeveloped lands. If you’re planning on being in the area, call ahead to arrange a tour of Babcock. Prepare for a time warp back into Old Florida, naturally intact. Ninety-minute swamp buggy tours plow you through the farm country and wetlands of 90,000-acre Crescent B Ranch and Telegraph Cypress Swamp to see alligators, cattle, deer, relocated bison, turkeys, and panthers. Bike tours lasting three hours are another mode of exploring. A prop shack chronicles the partial filming of the movie Just Cause, starring Sean Connery, at the site.
