Located here are 5,000 relatively undeveloped acres of grasslands and hills, river glens and canyons, open forests, a hike-in campground, and a horse camp (carry your own water). You’ll find wildflowers in the spring, good birding, and bluegill and black bass fishing in Redwood Lake. Hot and dry in the summer, glorious green in the winter and spring, the preserve is abundant with wildlife, from great blue herons, woodpeckers, and ravens to deer, foxes, and, occasionally, bobcats.
Bullfrog Campground here is accessed by a steep, narrow road that cannot be negotiated by RVs more than 20 feet long. Reservations by phone are advised, but you can also drop in and check the bulletin board at the campground for open sites (707–869–2015).
This is one of our favorite camping spots since the kids were very small. Be warned that the drive up from Armstrong Grove is much longer than you an imagine from the map! It's a SLOW drive but we love the peace and quiet of this camping spot. Our favorite spot is at the very end of the road--it opens up into a big area that we have shared with another family. The "pond' is not much to write home about, but it's a nice quiet area. The view along the road up is amazing, and we have stopped at the view points to ogle to scenery.
No showers here, but there is water available. Bring your necessities! It's a great tent-camping area with no big RV's making noise to keep you awake at night.
