Explore North America’s largest museum devoted to insects and their relatives. Thousands of live and preserved specimens illustrate the vast diversity of shape, size and color of Earth’s largest group of animals.
We visited the Insectarium as part of the "Audubon Experience" combo package. Overall, we enjoyed our visit, but I don't think I'd say it is a *must see* in New Orleans unless there is a budding zoologist in your family. The girls both enjoyed it and were happy to have gone, but agree that it is a "one-time" kind of place.
Pretending to be an ant, watching butterflies emerge from chrysalises, and walking through the butterfly garden was fun for us all. We skipped the insect cafe (we're vegetarians!). The 4-D movie was entertaining, but one little kid panicked, not understanding what had just poked her.
My 4 year old is fascinated by bugs, and this was very fun for him. it's well laid out, air conditioned, and they have an awesome little theater with special effects. My son still talks about it 6 months later! It can be a bit pricey, but if you purchase the Audubon combo package, it's well worth the price.
During the hot LA summer, the Insectarium is a great place to get out of the heat. We went in early September when school was back in session for most children. There were hardly any other families there. There were many different kinds of bugs to look at, and it provided a great experience for my son who later studied insects in kindergarten. We loved the dung beetles, appropriately placed by the bathroom! The cockroach display just wigged me out! My kids also loved EATING bugs! Make sure to do that. The butterfly exhibit that showed the metamorphosis was really neat too.
The Insectarium was the first brand new attraction to open after Hurricane Katrina. It is part of the Audubon family (zoo, aquarium) and definitely lives up to its name. The kids will love to check out all the creepy crawlies. There are touch stations with rangers throughout to answer questions. There is a movie where the seats will make you feel like the bugs are around you. Go underground and feel like you are part of the bug world. You can also try food made with bugs (we avoided this part!). It is a little pricey for tickets, but if you buy the Audubon combo tickets it is worth the visit. The butterfly garden at the end made the whole trip worthwhile for my daughter. The Insectarium is a little bit of a walk from the Aquarium so if you have little ones be sure to bring the stroller. My 4yo whined the whole walk about how tired he was! We spent about 3 hours here. Be sure to bring your parking ticket in because they will validate it and it will save you a few bucks.
