Heading to downtown Grand Rapids to check out all the ArtPrize entries is so much fun to do with little ones. Exposing children to art is so beneficial and ArtPrize is a great way to do that because it is basically all planned out for you. One tip: you can park at Frederick Meijer Gardens, see the ArtPrize entries there for free, and then take the free shuttle bus to downtown and not have to worry about paying for parking. If you buy the wristband for $5 you can then take the ArtPrize shuttle buses all over downtown. Also, anyplace that has an ArtPrize entry must have free viewing of that entry. So be sure to check out the public museum and art museum for free during this time. You'll be doing a fair amount of walking so be sure to bring your baby carrier or stroller.
I could not be more impressed or in love with Grand Rapids as I was when I went to Art Prize this past fall. Basically, it is art from all over the world displayed all over the city of Grand Rapids. You walk around, vote for your favorites and just enjoy the work and the city. The evening I went, most of the artist were present and it was great having the opportunity to talk with them. I did not bring my children, since it was my first time there. Next year I will do one adult night, and also bring the family for an afternoon. Some of the art will always appeal to children and adults, and others will be lost of the kids. But its free, and fun to spend a sunny afternoon exploring the city. Maybe not for kids still in strollers, but slightly older will enjoy for sure!
