I first went here to try some open water swimming. There are measured buoys to gauge how far you go. But this a nice beach for kids too. There are open showers and foot sprays to save your auto from mounds of sand. There's parking in Ghiradelli Sq parking lot and if you're lucky you might find a free spot on the street.
This is a great place to let your kids play in the sand and swim in San Francisco. It is located near Fisherman's Wharf and Ghirardelli Square. The views are fantastic! You can see the Golden Gate Bridge. The shore is well protected by piers so the water, although cold, is not rough. In other words, the waves do not come pounding in, which is perfect for young children. On warm afternoons, I will pack dinner, put the kids in the car, drive to San Francisco to pick up my husband and we'll head for Aquatic Park. The kids will swim and play in the sand while I swim further out in the Bay. Then we'll have dinner and head home. It makes for a wonderful time. We've also gone on Saturdays. There is some free parking and some metered parking. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and public restrooms. Dress in layers.
