The park is beautiful and clean. And if you are looking for a workout, you've found it. While you can "hike" a portion of the trail, the majority of it is a long, arduous set of stairs to climb to the top of the falls. For the smaller ones, you can drive them to the top for the same view.
Places to picnic are available.
Its hard to describe the beauty of the Amicalola Falls. We went there in December 2009. It was quite cold, but even then there were lots of visitors. Since we had a little one in tow, we couldn't go hiking. I would have loved to go hiking. We plan to go again in Spring. Lots of families and kids were around. We didn't stay overnight, but planning to do that in Spring.
Everything about the falls is beautiful. Awesome to see in the fall when the leaves are changing. The hike to the falls can be exhausting but very worth the trip. The kids will love the playground and you can take a picnic to enjoy. Great place to take the whole family!
Amicalola Falls is a GREAT place to visit with the family. They have nice playgrounds and a beautiful walk up to the falls. The best time to visit is in the fall when it's a little cooler and the leaves are at their peak for color. The park is very well kept and there are plenty of picnic areas, so I recommend bringing a picnic lunch.
Everything about this place is beautiful. From the trees, to the flowers, to the bushes, to the falls, and even the creeks leading up to the falls. It is kept clean, and is very family friendly. This place is definitely a place you will want to bring your stroller to for younger children, as it is a bit of a walk.
In addition to the hike to the top of the falls (650 or so steps), this park also offers a playground, rental cabins, and several hiking trails. The AT Approach Trail to Springer Mountain (8.5 miles one way) starts here and is a great way to experience the AT if you have avid experienced hikers in your family. At the bottom of the falls, there are several benches to sit on and listen or watch the falls and this seems to be a favorite fishing spot for locals, so you can watch the fisherman as well. The hike to the top of the falls is up hill, so make sure you plan to carry tired kids the rest of the way to the top or take frequent breaks at the provided benches along the route. If you prefer not to hike the falls, you can drive to the top. There are picnic tables at the top for a picnic lunch. Stop by the playground on the way out to play or the gift shop for a small museum of the local animals and ice cream!
I dislike the fact that much of the trail to the falls is done in the metal-grate stairs. I understand the logistics of it, but I'd rather walk on natural ground (the optical illusion makes me feel dizzy!!!) It also seems like it would be something of a challenge with small children.
Okay, so the falls are beautiful. The scenery and beautiful and totally worth it and all of that but I will admit that hike left me EXHAUSTED. And I didn't even hold the boy for the whole hike! My son was barely 1 so we had him in a carrier which my husband wore. It was gorgeous and I had some priceless photos at the top . I just wanted to warn that if you happen to be as "mushy" as me be prepared for a hard hike and plan accordingly.
