Pretty much your best bet in Astoria, Queens when it comes to a museum. They have a ton of history displayed when it comes to movies and television, and is worth it to stop in if you happen to be in Astoria for a nice meal or something like that. Decent location, right near some restaurants and a movie theater.
Before Hollywood there was Astoria, the birthplace of big-screen entertainment, where stars Rudolph Valentino, the Marx Brothers, and Gloria Swanson got ready for their close-ups. Saved from destruction in the 1970s by concerned film folk, today the Kaufman-Astoria Studios complex includes the largest sound stage outside of Hollywood, as well as seven smaller stages, and film and television production is booming.
Sesame Street is taped here, and although studio tours aren’t available, there’s a wonderful museum next door that displays thousands of artifacts from famous films and TV shows. This is an interactive museum, where visitors can try their talent at a dozen hands-on exhibits designed to show how movies are made and marketed.
