Learn about the legends and deep history connected with Amelia Island: why some Timucua Indians didn’t cut their hair, why the natives got along with the French and not the Spanish, and the haunting story of the island’s namesake. The museum occupies the old county jailhouse and conducts living history tours of its 400 years’ worth of artifacts. The ninety-minute tour may get long for younger children, but it is the only way to see the bulk of the exhibits downstairs. The museum also conducts specialty tours of the town’s cemetery, lovely old churches, and other themed sights.
