Make a seasonal visit to Aloun Farms for the obligatory October pumpkin. Visit during other times of the year to see and learn about Aloun Farms interesting history and mission.
So we have been going to the pumpkin patch every year for 4 years running. My kids love it, but I also should add this is the only pumpkin patch they have ever been to. Having grown up on the mainland and visiting "real" pumpkin patches, I am always a little disappointed by the pumpkin patch. I realized last year, my kids aren't going to pick pumpkins, in fact last year the pumpkins were so small and expensive, we stopped at the store on the way home to pick up big pumpkins (for the same price I might add). I realized my kids want to go to the pumpkin patch for everything else. Now we have never let them do the rides there, but we do usually let them do the pony rides, the petting zoo, and usually the hayride. The hayride is the best, if you can tolerate the line. The pony ride is ok, most years the horses have been so lame that it amazed me no one called ASPCA, the kids don't notice they just like getting to ride a horse. The petting zoo is fun, normal farm animals, but a good time filler while waiting in line for the pony. The fact the pumpkins are prepicked and set in the field is disappointing but the kids favorite activity while walking around is looking for rotten and smashed pumpkins and poking them with sticks, so they don't really care if the pumpkins are prepicked.
Don't forget water, walking shoes, wagon for carrying pumpkins (or plastic bags), sunscreen, clothes everyone can get dirty in, camera, and cash ($5-$10 per pumpkin, $1 per person for hayride, $5 for pony ride, $1-2 for petting zoo, $3 for parking...lots in other words).
Why 4 stars? While it may not be the best pumpkin patch, it is the only one on the island. So, if you live on Oahu and want your kids to experience a pumpkin patch, this is it and unless they have been to one on the mainland, they won't know what they are missing.
We took our boys to the Aloun Farms last weekend to pick pumpkins for Halloween. We went with my in-laws and had a great time. This is our 2nd year going. I had a great time last year, but I had an even better time this year.
The pumpkin patch is located about 45 min. from where we live on the hot Ewa plains. The pumpkins are pre-cut from the vines, but still placed throughout the patch. You walk around and choose whichever pumpkin you want. Last year the pumpkins seemed to be located randomly over the patch. This year they seemed to be more organized by size. There was even a section for the "glow in the dark" pumpkins which are the ones with the white skins.
The boys had a really good time walking through the patch and looking at the pumpkins. Our eldest wanted a big pumpkin this year and at 3 years strong tried to carry the biggest pumpkin he could find. That lasted all of 2 seconds before it was daddy's turn.
In addition to a pumpkin patch, there was a corn field. For a mere $15 you could pick as much corn as you could carry in a 5 gallon bucket. The workers said that the sweetest corn was in the middle of the patch, so that's where we headed. We filled our bucket to twice the height and only stopped because the boys weren't too happy about being completely surrounded by all the corn stalks. I think they were scared because the stalks were so tall and you couldn't see past 3 feet in front of you. As soon as a lifted my son on my shoulders to "help us find the exit" he was perfectly fine again.
The last thing we did was go on a hay ride. This was our eldest son's favorite activity at the farm. It was basically a couple of trailers hooked up to a tractor that pulled you around the farm. It was definitely not the most spectacular ride, but was enjoyable non-the-less. We sang a couple songs and pointed out things on the farm like the corn, pumpkins, irrigation system, and dirt. The favorite by far was the dirt because all the kids agreed "I like to play in the dirt!"
Parking was $3.00 and I'd recommend taking bottled water because it was blazing hot. You should also take a wagon of some kind to carry your pumpkins in. If you intend on searching through the entire patch for your perfect pumpkin and pick up a few along the way, your arms will get really tired.
We had a really great time overall and I hope to go again next year.
