"The "Funnest" Mall"

this is a very cute mall. but what i like about it, is there are lots of photo ops inside the mall.  also, it's nice to visit when you want to do something inside the air-conditioning, or on a rainy day, or if you have to pick up something at the department store.

you can have your photo taken with colorful birds.  you can pose with stuffed bears.  you can pose along side a mural of a hawaiian family.  you can pose next to the hula girl.

real cute mall !

"Great views of Honolulu harbor"

The shopping here seemed to be basically the same as you find on Waikiki, and prices are about the same.  But if you want to do something other than the beach, the tower is a great way to spend a couple of hours.  There's only a single creaky elevator to the top, or a staircase if you're athletic (but I think it might be closed now for security purposes).  The viewing deck on top gives you a 360 view of the harbor, Kakaako, and downtown Honolulu -- watch ships, the Superferry, the rainbows over the mountains, and all in what seems like heavenly peace after Waikiki.  I guess it must be crowded sometimes, but we've been there a few times and never had to wait long to get to the top.  There are food places and public restrooms in the marketplace.  It's a couple of miles from the Waikiki hotels, walkable if you're a cheapskate like me.  Buses go there (but maybe not directly from Waikiki) -- or it's only a short walk from Ala Moana Center, where every bus on the island seems to go eventually.

"Fun with the Family"

As you travel in an elevator to the top of the tower, note how the high-rises of Honolulu and Waikiki far surpass this tiny structure. When it was built in 1926, it was the tallest structure on the island! Be sure to take the ride to the top. It’s free, and the panoramic views of the harbor and surrounding cities are spectacular. It’s open daily from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
The tower was recently restored, and the surrounding marketplace, full of restaurants, recreation venues, and boutique-type shops, opened in November 1994. Today residents and visitors arrive to dine in the specialty eateries and stroll through the open-air mall. But in the old days, before jet travel carted hundreds of tourists at a time to these fair shores, visitors arrived via steamer ship, and all passengers disembarked at Aloha Tower.
Whenever a ship was due in, it was known as “Boat Day” in town. Locals would greet the incoming visitors in outrigger canoes and on surfboards in the water. It was always a celebration, complete with food, music, and dancing.
Although jet travel has rendered the tower’s usefulness as an embarkation site relatively unimportant, it is the departure and arrival point for American Hawaii Cruises’s Independence, which casts off on Saturday evenings.
The tower is a fun place to be on weekend evenings during the pau hana (after work) hour. Free Hawaiian entertainment by well known local musicians is featured at the open-air Pier Bar, weather permitting, usually from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.
