I didn't spend too long here, but this was my little one's first time at the beach! It was a warmer fall day and people seemed to be enjoying themselves here! Some people were in even in the (freezing cold!) water. Right across the street is Sushi House which is a popular and pretty great restaurant! (But go right when they open if you want to get a table :)) Overall, it seems like a fun family beach especially if you live in the East Bay and don't want to drive too far.
People DO NOT pick up their dog poo here. Its pretty gross really. Its very dirty! Garbage all over the beach, the sand is dirty, water looks nasty. Due to its geographic location the beach is on the receiving end of the bay's crap; the beach is cluttered with seaweed, flotsam and trash. The water is stagnant which leads to marsh conditions; i.e. the place reeks of sulfur.
However there are restrooms every quarter mile along the beach, though I did not go into any of them.
We love it! Sure, we're locals and love everything about the island but despite some of it's funkiness Alameda Beach does what a beach is supposed to do. It has sand, it has water (though we don't really go in the water), it has views (not of the infinite variety but an interesting view of SF and SSF) and even has action sports (tons of kite surfers on windy days). Perfect relaxing outing for adults and toddlers alike. Yes, these are not the pink sands of Bermuda but I'm still headed there any warm sunny weekend morning.
