Pleasant self-guided walk through lush tropical vegetation and to scenic vista points overlooking the cascading Kahuna Falls and the free-falling 'Akaka Falls which plunges 442 feet into a stream-eroded gorge. The 0.4-mile loop footpath requires some physical exertion.
Akaka Falls is a great stop for the whole family. The walk to the falls is full of lush vegetation!! Along the walk you will be able to view and smell Hawaii's tropical flowers. It is a self-guided, .4 mile loop. The loop takes hikers to Kahuna Falls (100 feet) and Akaka Falls (442 feet). Akaka Falls is a 20 minute drive north of Hilo.
This was a perfect visit with our kids. We were trying to squeeze a lot of scenery into a day of driving the coast - this wasn't too far off the track, and is SUCH an easy walk to the falls - you can take a 5 minute walk or a 20 minute loop. Well paved and easy. The falls itself was beautiful and even the view from the parking lot out onto the ocean was amazing. We met a man sitting at the beginning of the path weaving palm leaf baskets - said he's been sitting there for 15 years. My kids loved watching him - he even made little animals, origami style, to hook onto each basket.
Akaka Falls State Park is so beautiful, its lush vegetation, beautiful flowers, vines, all different kinds of plants and trees... its a rainforest. Reminds me of the movie Fern Gully. There are two main waterfalls there but multiple little streams, rivers and waterfalls along the trail. Free parking, bathrooms, no admission but a little drive up the hill. Love it.
The water falls here are so beautiful! They are giant too! This was a nice little stop on our island tour and I recommend making it apart of your tour as well! The only word of caution is if you need to bring a stroller you may want to avoid this or double back around the the falls as there is a large number of stairs back up to the parking lot.
Akaka Falls State Park , First of all, this park is NOT in Honolulu, it's near Hilo on the Big Island!
Beautiful scenery, not too long of a hike. Mostly or maybe completely paved (I went several years ago). Lots of tropical plants and flowers, birds.
The trail is suitable for children of all ages, and the majestic sights beyond each turn will delight everyone. You’ll pass through groves of orchids, ferns, and bamboo and over small gurgling streams. The falls tumble 426 feet into a beautiful jungle pond. There are picnic tables and restrooms on-site.
