The completely restored Ahuena Heiau is where King Kamehameha the Great
retreated to spend his remaining days after conquering all the islands. The nearby
King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel (329–2911) offers free guided tours of the
heiau grounds Monday through Friday at 1:30 P.M.
Although you must get permission from the security guards to enter the grounds, you needn’t visit as part of a tour. Within the heiau grounds is a temple dedicated to the god of fertility, Lono. The oracle tower, or anuu, is the tallest part of the heiau and is where the high-ranking priest would meditate and receive messages from the gods.
