We always have a good time at this zoo. It's a small zoo, but it's free (donations) and well worth the trip. The variety of animals is great and they are always improving and adding to the habitats. My kids love the playground and were disappointed that it wasn't open on our last visit. (I'm guessing they did not have the staff available to open some of the areas.) They also have train and carousel rides for a small fee.
This is one of my favorite trips each year. We make it a point to go the Madison Zoo each year. The cost to get into the Zoo is free. They have many exhibits both inside and out. Some of the exhibits include the chimpanzee, monkeys, polar bears, seals, alligators, snakes, lions, frogs and so many more. The kids love the petting zoo where they can feed the animals. My personal favorite activity is the picnic we bring a blanket and out picnic basket and have a picnic right outside the gate at the amazing park for the kids. What better way is there to have a family picnic at the zoo. I would recommend the Madison WI Zoo to anyone that's visiting this Madison area or just someone looking for a free event for the family.
My Family and I Love the zoo, especially this one you can even bring your own lunch and drinks. So explore the zoo till lunch time then have a picnic. Then start where you left off, all for free. They have a good selection of animals from bears to turtles and they have built a play area for the children inside. Also Madison is not to far away and the Lake is right next to the zoo so you could also go swimming when done!
As others have said, this is a great activity for the price...FREE. Besides looking at the animals (and there's a good variety) there are a number of activities for kids. Tree House and Adventure Play Area; train rides; Conservation Carousel is a must; hands-on Discovery Center; and children's zoo area. You can also go there for Halloween, if you're looking for a safe/fun trick or treating experience!
This zoo is perfect for our family. Our children are young, under 4, and this provides a fun place to see animals, but not dish out a lot of money. It is free! They have a wonderful children's playground, and a nice place to have a picnic lunch. My children enjoy going even though it is a smaller zoo. There are enough animals so no one will be bored, but few enough that you can see everything your family would want in several hours.
Like the other reviews said this is a small zoo. This can be a good thing as larger zoos tend to be a bit overwhelming, especially for smaller children. The animals are well taken care of and the best part is that the zoo is free! Definitely worth going. Recommended!
The Madison Henry Villas Zoo is fabulous! Parking can be difficult if you get there later on in the morning, so go first thing. Even if you are there during a busy time though, you can still find something...just plan on walking a ways. As far as free zoos go, this is the most amazing one ever! The displays are nice and kid friendly, there are a ton of animals to see and everything is clean and well ran. Best of all is the neighboring attractions. There is a nice playground within the zoo, and several nice playgrounds right next to it, including a swimming beach. You can easily make a day of it!
It may be a smallish zoo, but the habitats are natural looking and the animals seem happy as animals can be in zoos. I typically find zoos depressing, but this is a small, friendly homey zoo. They have a new playground that my daughter disappears into for half an hour at a time, and a pretty endangered animal carousel ($1 rides). The prairie dog exhibit is always a favorite, as well as the seals. There are rhinos, giraffes, tapirs, tigers, lions, monkeys, a herpetorium, alligators, goats, an ostrich, camels, peafowl, flamingos, kangaroos, bears, buffalo, elk, and more. Give it a shot, guaranteed 2 hours of fun inside the zoo (for free!) and there's a lake and a playground right next to the zoo grounds as well. Parking is limited so get there early or be prepared to walk a couple of pleasant residential blocks.
By some standards Vilas Zoo is small - but it is perfect for a morning or afternoon trek, and it is FREE!
It has all the animals you want - lions and tigers and bears (and penguins, snakes, camels, elephants, birds)
Its smaller size makes it easy to do with a toddler, and best of all free admission means if the kids are a little too tired to take it all in, or you want to go over and ver it is doable.
Madison is beautiful as well
