From March 16 through December 31st, the museum hours are extended to 7pm.
Admission to the combined Museums of Colonial Williamsburg (DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, Bassett Hall) is included in the following Colonial Williamsburg general admission passes: Capital City One-Day Ticket, Governor’s Key-to-the-City Two Day Pass, Freedom Pass, Independence Pass, CW Hotel Guest Pass, and also the local resident Good Neighbor Pass.
This museum moved to an expanded, 10,000-square-foot space in February 2007. The facility houses one of the nation’s finest collections of folk art. Kids are intrigued by folk art with its simple lines, bright colors, and easily recognizable figures. Paintings and objects from the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries are on display.
My family’s favorites are the whimsical hog and cow weather vanes, the old-fashioned toys, and the portraits of children with fat cats and flower baskets. The ground floor and the outdoor sculpture gar-den display changing exhibits of contemporary folk art.
The Folk Art Museum has a number of programs for families and kids, especially in the summer. From June through August, Abby’s Art gives kids a chance to create their own masterpieces every Friday after-noon.
Throughout the year on Wednesday and Friday mornings, kids can enjoy Wee Folk, a 45-minute tour and activity session for 3 to 7 year-olds.
