This is a high end shopping district. There are a few shops for kids but this is mainly targeted to parents. There are a few great restaurants on the strip and a Peets coffee. It is fun to window shop and the doggie store is a must. This is more fun for a child when compared to a strip mall.
I like to go to 4th street with or without children as I like the small businesses community. When you go around Christmas time, you will enjoy beautiful decorated windows and trees and my children enjoy sipping a hot chocolate while accompanying me. And let's not forget the East Bay Vivarium that they love to visit every time we go to that side of town.
4th street is a fun place to walk around. Most of the shops are too expensive for me, but I definitely like looking at all the neat and cute things! It can get pretty crowded on the weekends, but on the weekdays is not as bad.
(Sketch is now CLOSED)
One of our favorite ice cream places is here at 4th Street! It's called Sketch http://sketchicecream.com/Sketch_Ice_Cream.html and they make their own ice cream every day! It is such a yummy treat!
Absolutly adore 4th street. its seriously amazing! they have everything you could possibly imagine there! MY two favorite places there are bettys diner which has the most amazing breakfast in the world! just be aware there tends to usually always be a pretty long wait, so best to go earlier and put your name on the wait list and then wonder around 4th street till its your turn to eat! they have a super cool scrapbook store thats a little further down that has everything you can imagine there! super awesome store! im obsessed!
The restaurant and factory outlet ghetto of Berkeley.
• Bette’s Oceanview Diner, 1807 Fourth Street; (510) 644–3230. My family’s favorite restaurant in the East Bay, and a favorite with the people who stand in line to get in. This all-American, circa-1940 cafe with booths and a counter opens at 6:30 A.M. and goes full blast all day long, through dinner; take out as well as eat in. The epitome of comfort food. $.
• Royal Robbins, 841 Gilman Street off Fourth; (510) 527–1961. Top quality outdoor recreation equipment and clothing, at a discount. My husband has Royal Robbins shorts that he’s worn every summer for twenty years. Really!
• Earthsake, 1772 Fourth Street; (510) 559–8440. Interesting eco stuff,
including toys, games, and books.
• REI, 1338 San Pablo Avenue, near Fourth Street; (510) 527–4140. Top-of-the-line camping and outdoor recreational equipment, clothing, bikes, a climbing wall, boots, running gear, guidebooks, and ski stuff.

Emphasis on nature, history, science, and travel, through a wide variety of electronic toys and games; travel accessories; books; DVDs of Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, and Animal Planet programs; and clothing. Teens love it.

If you've ever pictured what Berkeley is like, this is an area that captures it. At least that's how my friend described it to be before we went. I came here when visiting my friend and her child. Definitely would opt to keep your kids in their strollers if they are cool with doing that. There are several boutiques and a few cool specialty toy shops. So if mommy needs a little playtime herself, I would check it out. There are some yummy eateries as well to grab some grub and sit outside to people-watch.
nice shopping for adults with some good eating options along the way. we love sketch, a cute gelato shop that has no indoor seating. it's run by a couple that i think is now married. the downside is that more of the shopping is hazardous with little wanderers since there are a bunch of houseware shops that keep breakables in low areas and there's lots of traffic on the street.
